Hi everyone! So good to be back with yet another speaker project after a long break.

Since most of my builds require quite a few tools to complete, this time I decided to build a portable speaker using a kit that you can purchase easily. I thought it would be a great idea to share a high quality speaker kit that is easy to assemble on your own and sounds great just as well.

I was fortunate enough to have Parts Express provide me with an inexpensive MKBoom speaker kit that consists of the drivers, the KAB amp board with the necessary accessories, port tubes, crossover boards, and the knock-down cabinets which are of great quality. If you are wondering about building a speaker yourself, I highly encourage you take a look at this MKBoom speaker kit.

I have to say that I am very impressed with the overall quality of this speaker kit. From great packaging to high quality of the CNC’d panels, this kit provides all the needed instructions, bolts, screws etc. to help you build a one of a kind portable Bluetooth speaker that you can customise however you like and that also sounds amazing.

Producing clear highs, wide soundstage and punchy and submerging bass from 4 inch woofers is just incredible. It sounds even better knowing that this speaker has been built by yourself.

To my mind, this speaker has an incredible value – not only is it not pricey, it is also a one of a kind speaker that you won’t be able to buy off-the-shelf at the store since it will be customised with a unique design.

I have this speaker playing some soft jazz tunes while writing this description and can’t get enough of the great sound quality it produces.

Hope you give this build a try!

See you on the next one!

– Donny

  1. hello, include language translator in your video on youtube – please your very interesting projects.
sound can be improved by adding soundproofing inside the walls.
    Thanks

  2. Hello, congratulations for your work.
Could you give me the thickness of the wood used and the diameter of the tube? Thank you

  3. Hey, Donny, just finished building mine. Sounds really good, and boy does it crank! Lots of power.
I was quite surprised at how good it sounds. I hooked up a cd player through the aux port. Works like a charm. Bluetooth synched up no problem.
Parts Express has some really cool kits! Very reasonably priced.

  4. If we order on one part Express, will supply all items together, as I am in india. I don’t was want piece by piece order.

  5. Hey Donny, i am maybe planning on buying this set and i would like to know something. How is the bass on this thing? because i like a bit of hearable bass. and how many people can conncect on the speaker?

  6. Just enough attention to detail. without being all anal-retentive.
Sure wish there were options for EQ and headphone out.

  7. Thanks for posting this! Without it I would not have been able to figure out my MKBoom. This should be the official video! @partsexpress

  8. I thought it was excellent, very well presented and delivered, I thought you would have done another coat of paint and I’ve not checked yet but hope you’ve done a link to the component parts. DG New Forest U.K.

  9. I watched your video.. Almost all is good, but… C`mon, dude.. you were gluing up perfectly machined boards using tape..!!?? why the hell?? You ended up with horrible gaps between panels which you filled with putty.. buy yourself some clamps and the end result will be way better. Other than that, good work

  10. Just built this unit. sounds pretty impressive!!… worth every penny!… used for 6 hrs straight at pretty high volume and the batteries lasted no problem. Played all types of music. For wattage, price and size theres no other Bluetooth speaker like this👍

  11. Awesome build! Really looks like something you could buy in a store. Aren’t the Reflex Tubes a little small though? I’ve heard as a rule of thumb the hole of the tube should be about 1/5 of the membrane area…

  12. Hello, can you provide some dimensions for the port tubes and how to make crossovers? I can’t find them in the specification list. Thanks, great video.
