Several fitness trackers, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S5, now boast the ability to measure your heart rate. How do their readings stack up to an EKG? CNET’s Sharon Profis with help from Kaiser Permanente cardiologist Dr. Jon Zaroff put the Garmin VivoFit, Withings Pulse O2, Basis Carbon Steel, Samsung Gear Fit, and Samsung Galaxy S5 to the test.

  1. My Garmin watch seems pretty spot on, even during exercise. I often test it out the old fashioned way just to be sure.

  2. I’m over here freaking out with anxiety thinking my jogging heart rate of 140 was high, she was doing a light jog and she’s fit and it was at 175…. I’m goooooood lol

  3. Anyone noticed she had heart rate of 190 and speak normally without panting hard? That’s crazy cause I can’t even catch my breath when my heart rate reach 180.

  4. 8 years nothing has changed. Wrist heart rate monitors are worthless for measuring heart rate while exercising. Chest strap is the best

  5. Yikes! I dunno that 170+ is a good or healthy heart rate with such a short workout! And 146 is her rest?? I stress out when my resting BPM goes over 70 and I really have to push it to even get to 160 BPM on my hard cycling rides or hard runs!

  6. comment section shows everyone was worried more about the reporter’s heart rate rather than the level of accuracy for the fitness trackers

  7. ITT: People who are not doctor asking her to consult a doctor when a literal cardiologist is monitoring her.

  8. I just returned my smartwatch because the heartrate monitor was a crucial thing for me. It was way off during sports. I was pushing 200 watts on a gym bike like mad and the watch only showed 56 bpm. Optical monitors are useless.

  9. What are other pain points in heart rate monitoring in a watch? Can improving optical efficiency or reducing power consumption at the LED help? Will VCSELs be preferable to LEDs?

  10. I’m just impressed she could get her HR up to 193 easily at that age…. and she could talk while doing it. Wtf am I doing wrong? At 195 probably 10 years younger than her there is no way I’m talking much.

  11. Today i did intensive cardio, running and jumping, i was at 170, i once had a panic attack doing excersise and reached 186 it felt really bad, and she reached 190 like nothing is happening and the dr is like theres nothing wrong.

  12. People in this comment section are beyond uneducated. 175bpm is not a high heart rate for a young woman, infact it’d be within the target limits

  13. The inaccuracy of the devices aside, you can see cardiologist internally panicking over her HR being so high.

  14. Thanks for opening my eyes ❤️❤️❤️
I was about to buy one of these
Now i knew that everything about these trackers was a just marketing

  15. This is what happens when you don’t have a basic understanding of science. This experiment could have been easily done at home. She should have tested the other features like oximeter, sleep tracker, etc. while in the lab.

  16. Your heart rate crazy high going at a walking pace you sure your not Haveing a heart attack 170 193 going at a slow walking pace how are you even out of breath your heart rate shouldn’t go that high going that slow

  17. I want a heart rate monitor while I sleep anyone recommend one? Hopefully I can plug it in and or has lithium battery.
